Ten years ago, Ted and I moved to Indiana. I have talked almost every year about going to see Thunder again. I even went as far as trying to plan out where we could stay and checking the weather one year. It just never happened. Sick kids, small babies, cold weather, rain.... All the things that happen to make you NOT want to go anywhere. ever. This year, the weather was looking to be good. I don't have any small babies and everyone was mostly healthy. I told Ted we were doing it for sure. Who knows how much longer we will be out this way. I didn't want to miss it.
**I suppose I should pause for a moment and clarify what Thunder over Louisville is for those that aren't in the know. Louisville does a two week celebration for the Kentucky Derby every year. There are all sorts of events that occur to celebrate this major event for the city and for the Horse Racing community. Thunder over Louisville is the kickoff event on the Saturday 2 weeks before the Derby.**
I spent my time looking at schedules and maps and hotel costs and locations to determine the best way to go and partake of the firework goodness that is Thunder. In the end, we decided to make a day of it and drive home afterwards. Yes it is 3 hours, but when the closest (non-booked) hotel is half way home you might as well just suck it up and drive the rest of the way. There is an airshow that starts at 3pm. I thought the kids would love that. As we were packing up lunches and other needed items in the car (we were TOTALLY on schedule) we realized that Louisville is in the EASTERN TIME ZONE! I will spare you my rant about incorrect time-zones at this point, but believe you me, there is one. We were now an HOUR behind schedule. After a few minutes of panic I realized that the airshow events lasted all afternoon so we were going to be ok. /phew. We packed up and headed up to Louisville.
Upon arriving and securing our parking and then our Pegasus Pins (this gains us entrance into various sections of the festivities) we proceeded to wander around... and around... and around. We were looking for the Family Fun section that our Pins would gain us admittance to. We never found it. But we did find a playground so that worked. The kids were awesome sports and seemed to be mostly enjoying themselves. The Army had a helicopter available for us to sit in. It was very cool. We finally obtained some dinner and found us a spot to sit and wait for the show to start. There were parachuters with fireworks on their feet to keep us entertained while we waited for it to get dark enough. Who does that??! FINALLY the show started. I am very glad to say that the show lived up to every single childhood memory. I hadn't blown the awesomeness out of proportion over time. My kids and my husband were very excited and impressed by the awesomeness. (There was a lot riding on this... I had been talking it up for TEN years!!) They even still do the waterfall off the bridge!
Nathan told me that the show was STUPENDOUS! The best part of his day on Sunday, was going to the fireworks on Saturday. Here are a few pictures from the show. They don't do it justice at all. Not even a little bit. But I wanted some pictures to remember it and also as proof that we made it there. If you ever have the opportunity to go to this show. You should.

It looks and sounds amazing! The best part was that it lived up to your childhood memories. There aren't many things that do. What a fun weekend!
